What to pack for New York
Packing is a mix of nerves and excitement, right? Even more so when you are heading to New York, a city full of life and possibilities. I put together this guide to help you organize everything you will actually need—without overpacking or forgetting the essentials!
Think about the time of year
New York’s weather changes quite a bit throughout the year, so your suitcase should be ready for different conditions. Here are the essentials you need year-round and the items that depend on the season.
Essentials for every season
- Comfortable clothes: New York is a city to explore on foot, so choose clothes you can move around in.
- Good walking shoes: comfortable sneakers or well-cushioned boots are essential.
- US power adapter: outlets in the United States are different, so a universal adapter is very useful!
- Internet access: mobile data is important for using maps, checking routes, and booking a ride.
- Organized documents: keep your passport, reservations, and travel insurance close at hand.
If you are going in winter (December to March)
- A warm, windproof coat: New York can get very cold, especially when the wind makes it feel even colder.
- Layers (base layers, wool, or fleece): dressing in layers is the key to staying warm.
- Gloves, a hat, and a scarf: essentials for staying comfortable in the cold!
- Waterproof boots: if it snows, you will be glad you brought them.
If you are going in summer (June to August)
- Lightweight, breathable clothes: it can get hot, so choose cool fabrics.
- A hat or cap and sunglasses: extra sun protection is always helpful.
- Sunscreen and a reusable water bottle: protect your skin and stay hydrated while exploring.
Fall and spring (in-between seasons)
- Lightweight coats or a windbreaker: temperatures are mild but can change quickly.
- A compact umbrella: rain can appear without warning.
- Versatile clothes: layers you can adjust to the weather each day.
💚 One more tip!
Leave some room in your suitcase for shopping—New York has everything, and it is almost impossible to resist bringing home a souvenir (or several!). Also check your airline’s baggage rules to avoid surprises on the way back.
If you would like a ready-to-use checklist to print or save on your phone, leave a comment and I will be happy to put one together!
